Monday Classes for 4th -6th Grade

​1st Period:
Hands On Science - (Heather C.) - THIS CLASS IS FULL

Hands on Science will involve experiments and activities every week
in class. Science is an opportunity to try and understand God’s plan for the world. We will learn
first hand about the science involved in Chemistry, Physics, Engineering and Biology. Students
should come ready to learn through experiments and class participation. There will be some
homework that will include writing, vocabulary and research of famous scientist.  Students will need a 1 inch binder for this class.  The fee for this course will be $20.

Little House on the Prairie - (Risa B.)

This year we will be using Farmer Boy for our Little House on the Prairie study.  Farmer Boy is a full of wonderful, detailed descriptions of northeastern U.S. farm life and homesteading in the 1800's.  We will read from the book and assign reading each week (usually 1 chapter per week).  On co-op days, we will work from our Farmer Boy student guide and work in crafts and projects that correlate. Greek Mythology -(Tracy B.)

We will be looking at a number of Greek myths, what they mean, what effect they had on Ancient Greece and modern life, some Greek history, and what the Bible has to say about it all. Classes at this level will be contained to that class period with no homework. No specific books are required. Access to the major Greek Myths in print, audio, or video form would be helpful, but not required.  I will be using D'Aulaire's Greek Myths, Famous Men of Greece, and Memoria Press Guide for Famous Men of Greece.  There will be a $5 fee for this class.

Playground Games - (Amy B.)

We will be spending the year playing classic and new playground games.  Some examples are tag, kickball, and gaga ball.  This class is for kids that want to have fun without the stress of high level competitive games.

Drama (6th grade only) - (Ann F.)

Students will improve their acting skills by practicing various scenes, working on ice breaker games, improvisation, and learning parts of plays.  Spring semester, they will be working on and presenting a Passion Play.  The fees for this class will be $5.

2nd Period:
Introduction to Spanish * - (Shannon R.)

This is a fun class that will prepare students for Spanish 1.  All students would need to purchase Espanol En Vivo Level 1.  I will provide weekly songs and videos on YouTube for additional practice outside of the classroom.  Most of our classes will be in Spanish. (I shoot for 75% Spanish in class.)  I look forward to teaching your child!

Airplane/ Rocket Science- (Tiffany P.) - THIS CLASS IS FULL

Students will learn about Newton's 3rd Law of Motion, historical figures, and events.  The first half of the year, we will study rockets and build a rocket through NASA Education.  The second half of the year, we will be using the Flite Test Stem program to build and test airplane designs.  Students will need a 1/2 inch notebook and dividers with pockets (the five dividers pack).  Cost of the class will be $20 per semester.

 

Mixed Media Arts -(Lauren L.) THIS CLASS IS FULL

An experience of a variety of mediums:  paint, clay, and decoupage to allow students an opportunity for creative expression.  The fee for this course is $20.

Pioneer Skills (Tammy P.) - THIS CLASS IS FULL

Ever wonder how the pioneers survived without modern conveniences?  In this class, we will explore some skills that pioneers had to have to make life bearable and survive.  We will learn sewing, gardening, food preservation, wilderness survival, woodworking, soap making, candle making, natural first aid, and more!  Come enjoy life as the pioneers did!  The class fees for this course is $20.

Literature Circle - (Terri K.)

In Literature Circle we will be diving into some great literature to get excited about books, broaden interests and enhance comprehension. We will work through four primary books together throughout the year with read-aloud time in class and independent reading outside of class. For the remainder of class time we will be discussing our book using the art of narration in addition to going through picture biographies, fairy tales and children’s adaptations of Chaucer’s stories and Shakespeare’s plays throughout the year.

 

Books that will need to be purchased for reading are: Half Magic by Edward Eager, Family Under the Bridge by Natalie Savage Carlson, Gone-Away Lake by Elizabeth Enright and The Twenty-One Balloons by William Pene duBois.

3rd Period:
PE Sports and Competitive Games - (TBA) - THIS CLASS IS FULL

Cooking - (Lindsay D.) THIS CLASS IS FULL

This is an introductory cooking class.  Students will learn kitchen and knife safety, basic cooking skills, and basic baking skills. The fee for this course is $20.

IEW Writing - (Lea S.) THIS CLASS IS FULL

This writing class will focus on IEW (Institute for Excellence in Writing) Structure and Style Writing Method. Art History - (Heather B.)

This art history class will focus on studying art from many different periods and of many different types.  We will look at defining features of art from certain time periods and places, and talk about identifying features of specific pieces of art.  

We will be looking at art and talking about well-known artists.  Time will be spent creating our own art.  There is a $5 fee for this class to help cover the cost of art supplies.  No books are required.  I would like for the students to have a folder to keep any worksheets or their own art creations in.

4th Period:
Anatomy - (Valerie C.) - THIS CLASS IS FULL

Using The Good and The Beautiful's "The Human Body, Part 1" curriculum, we will explore nine* of the main systems of the body: Skeletal, Muscular, Respiratory, Circulatory, Nervous, Digestive, Urinary, Immune, Integumentary. We will also learn about Genetics (which is not covered in the TGTB curriculum).

*The Endocrine and Reproductive systems are not included in the TGTB curriculum

 

Students will learn the purpose of each body system, the main organs of the system and their specific functions, and how the organs work together in order for the system and body to function as a whole. 

This is an introduction to the human body and will not require any major homework. Parents will be provided with plenty of resources for books and/or videos on each topic so that they may dive as deep they would like to at home with each section.

Students will need a binder or spiral notebook to write notes and paste worksheets. (And, of course, things like a pencil, glue, and scissors).

NO textbook required. The fees for this course will be $20.

Book Club- (Laura C.)THIS CLASS IS FULL

Students will be expected to read the book selections at home prior to class each week.  We will engage in book discussions and other activities related to the stories we read.  We will also work on some basic paragraph writing skills to help us become better writers in middle school.  In addition to the basic school supplies, students need to bring a copy of their book and a notebook to class each week.   There is a $5 fee to cover the cost of consumable supplies.   I am still working on the book list, but here is a list of books I am considering.

* For parents who would like to make this class their reading class at home, I will have a series of study guides available for purchase in my Teachers Pay Teachers store that go along with each book.  This is not needed for the class, it is simply something that I put together for my own child and sell it in my store for anyone who would like a copy.

Math- (Amanda G.)

We will start this class with a page of math minutes (whichever level you think your child needs).  We will keep score.  Then we will play different math games and work on mental math.  The fees for this class will be $5.

SC State History - (Laurel P)

Students will need to purchase Abeka's My State Notebook ($16.75 plus taxes and shipping on Amazon) and draw from supplemental material provided by the teacher. We will discuss disciplinary skills: Comparison, causation, periodization, context, continuities and changes, and evidence.
